Ravichandran Ashwin, the renowned all-rounder and veteran cricketer, has recently expressed his views on the peculiar request made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to swap the venues for two matches in the upcoming ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in India. Known for his astute understanding of the game, Ashwin has raised doubts about the likelihood of the International Cricket Council (ICC) considering Pakistan’s request, given the nature of the reasoning provided.

As per the original schedule, Pakistan is slated to face Australia at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on October 20, followed by a match against Afghanistan three days later at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. However, PCB has made a formal request to interchange the venues for these two matches. Surprisingly, the board has failed to provide any rational grounds to support their proposal.

Ashwin, sharing his thoughts on PCB’s request, expressed skepticism regarding the ICC’s acceptance of such a demand, considering the favorable conditions that Pakistan claims Afghanistan would experience in Chennai. By swapping the venues, it would seemingly create an advantage for Pakistan. In light of this, Ashwin highly doubts that the ICC will accede to the request, unless Pakistan can substantiate it with valid security concerns, which were the basis for venue changes in previous tournaments.

The cricketer referred to a past incident during the 2016 T20 World Cup when an India-Pakistan match was originally scheduled to be held in Dharamsala. However, due to security reasons, the venue was shifted to Kolkata. Ashwin highlighted that only genuine security concerns have historically prompted the ICC to consider such requests. Therefore, unless Pakistan can provide substantial security-related grounds, it is unlikely that the ICC will entertain the idea of venue changes.
